TempRite® CPVC compounds offer exceptional thermal performance characteristics that allow for the introductionof dark-colored substrates in the manufacture of windows. Ideal for environments with high service temperatures, TempRite CPVC compounds feature superior processibility and mechanical integrity for profile extrusion of glazing beads, lineals and complicated shapes requiring tight dimensional tolerances.
Window manufacturers have previously used plastics like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) but have been limited tolighter-colored surfaces, since darker colors tend to absorb more heat. This effect can actually cause a profile's surface temperature to rise as much as 70F over the outside ambient temperature. Because PVC has a heat distortion temperature (HDT) of only 150°F to 160°F, depending on the base color, manufacturers faced concerns of dimensional shrinking and warping, which restricted them from producing windows in darker colors.
TempRite CPVC compounds offer a highly effective alternative to PVC since they maintain a larger portion of their mechanical properties at temperature levels well beyond what many other plastics can withstand. Offering an HDT of 220°F (104°C) for mechanical property retention, TempRite CPVC compounds are highly durable materials that resist distortion, warping and buckling, even at elevated temperatures. These important material characteristics allow manufacturers to use a wider spectrum of colors in broader temperature ranges.
Less stress frozen into the part during the manufacturing process results in reduced bowing and shrinkage as the profile attempts to relax. Low die swell characteristics allow the processor quicker die development and more in-spec finished parts to shorten the application development cycle and accelerate commercialization.
In addition, TempRite CPVC compounds exhibit tight dimensional tolerance control over a wide processing range. They also perform well in complicated shapes that require multiple polymer extrusion capabilities. As a result, manufacturers may realize increased parts consolidation and a subsequent decrease in manufacturing costs. Since TempRite CPVC compounds handle and process similar to standard vinyl materials, a majority of PVC processors are able to use most of their existing tooling and downstream equipment.
Improved processability produces consistent, smooth and polished parts for a high-quality appearance at an economical processing rate. Processing can range from very slow extrusion rates of 3 feet to 5 feet/minute for low shear applications up to 80 feet to120 feet/minute for high sheer applications, all on conventional extrusion equipment.
In addition to elevated thermal performance, TempRite CPVC compounds offer superior corrosion and chemical resistance, rigidity, strength, and high shear extrudability. Additional safety benefits include inherent UL94 5Va flame performance and low smoke generation.
TempRite CPVC compounds are made to stock in tan, gray and black.
